mixed media

I like a nice, tidy toy cupboard. It makes my heart sing a little just to see all the puzzle pieces where they should be, the musical instruments neatly ordered in their basket and the art supplies all spick and span.

It makes me feel a warm inner glow, but it does nothing for my kids creativity.

Experimentation is key.

Mix the lego with the play-doh. See what worlds they create.

Take the barbie horse out in to the garden and let it run wild with the frogs and spiders.

Make up your own game using elements from other board games - ClueMonopoly any one?

Indoor-Outdoor camping? Complete with hot chocolate, toy food and sleeping bags. Messy, messy, messy but fun, fun, fun.

I have just sat here, having spent half an hour picking dough out of lego crevices, sorting out puzzles that were mooshed together to create a "pick-a-puzzle-piece" game and finally scooping up the shreds of cardboard after a serious robot making episode.

I am exhausted, and it is worth it.

If you can be brave, and let the kids lead the way in mixing it up, the results are hours of fun and experimentation.

Innovation comes at a price, and today I am happy to pay it.

You go, mama! You've just inspired a deep intake of breath, in preparation for an 'experimental' day.
