We regularly add to our post office. Items I would recommend are: bits of junk mail with tear off slips, used stamps, an ink stamper, envelopes of all shapes and sizes and a small clipboard.
Post Offices is a regular role play activity for MB, and today he was keen to do it properly. Gone are the days of randomly posting items through the front. Now he wants stamps, correctly addressed envelopes and he wanted a uniform and bag.....the last one is my project tonight!
Being home educators, I could see the potential for learning here. My favourite kind - when the child doesn't even know he is learning some thing.
So, I did a list of jobs for Mb, with a list of peoples names and address, and how many stamps their envelope needed, and Mb spent the next thirty minutes writing out the envelopes in his very best handwriting, discussing with his siblings the importance of clearly labelling your post and developing theories about why we use stamps, and why the Queens head is on so many of them.
Then he looked at the list, which was laid out like this:
Name Address Stamps Needed
Mrs Brown 4 Red Road, Greentown, GR1 2PP 20p x1, 10p x 2
We used real stamps, as Grandad regularly gives us envelopes stuffed with used stamps which we trim and recycle for art work and games.

We love our wooden letterbox and I have plans to make some felt 'mail' to add to our fun.
Thanks for linking up to We Play this week.
