Eb is listening to Holst :: The Planets. He has discovered this through a rather good animated You Tube video of the Mars rover set to Holst's Mars piece. He then quite naturally went on to discover the other planets and has been playing them, loudly throughout the day. It's one of those nice home ed moment where you can see your child follow a passion down a new path, and see a world of possibilities open up to them - or you could call a smug home educator moment.
Of course, I am brought firmly back to earth (ha! See the unintended pun there!) by Mb and Shrek. When it is their turn to choose a song, it is this, the hamster song that has been played again and again.
It feels surreal and completely strange to go from moody, menacing god of war music to chirpy, squeaky pop in under five minutes.
It is home education in action. The kids have been comparing how the music makes them feel. It was blazingly obvious with Shrek, as Mars made him come over all angry eyes whereas hamster song produced a smiley toddler. We talked about music as therapy, electronic versus unplugged, music history, not to mention the serious negotiation skills to allocate music playing time.
But mostly, we've been doing this:
(Yes, Shrek has had a hair cut - he has his daddy to thank for that)
(Yes, Shrek has chucked a cup of water down his front and lost his trousers in the process - what can I say, that party hard)
(Yes, that's a christmas decoration. Don't ask.)
