We attempted the first challenge - to build a boat out of cardboard and sticky tape and see if it floats. We didn't have enough cardboard to make a boat big enough for us to sit in (but we will by the end of the week, thanks to the lovely people at our local Tesco,) so instead we made mini protoypes and used brave little playmobil people as our captains.....let the chaos commence!
This is the building process (yes, EB is in pants only. As soon as the sun comes out he feels the need to strip, really, you are lucky he has pants on.)
Then we tested the prototypes in the paddling pool. This is OD's. She cruelly strapped her captain in, so she couldn't escape as the waves started to come aboard. This one was deemed unsuccessful. Obviously.
Then it was it was the turn of EB's boat. He built his to fail. He wanted his to sink, so you could say he achieved his objective. It not only sank, as a double bonus, it fell apart too.
Lastly, MB's boat. He spent a while contemplating the shape of his boat, and bizarrely put a little cross on his - a homage to the Viking funeral ships maybe? His floated. This was some thing to crow about for the rest of the day. At bedtime he could be heard in his bed whispering to himself "mine won, mine won." Probably just to annoy his siblings, but quite sweet all the same.

I have just been reminded what a joy it is to come over here for a visit! And yes, we have had the kid discussion about making rainy, slightly more uncomfortable versions of snow angels. I volunteered to take the pics!
we've found that cardboard tubes with a third cut out - so the sides are really high - then completely waterproofed with flexy plastic, that you get in some packaging - seethru plastic boxes I basically mean - and lots of sellotape work really well!
that last picture - just sooooo sweet!
the choppywavemaker is ridiculously huggable.
aw, it's that toothless egg phase (as papacrow calls it) just irrisitable!
Tania - It rained but the kids refused to lie in it for photos. Spoil sports.
Mamacrow - I will try the cardboard tube plan and see if it works, and toothless egg sums up my baby perfectly :)
Grit - He is huggable, but has just started hitting so the hugs can hurt some times.
