Today we went for a picnic and a walk along the
river, and it was a highly successful day because no one fell in. This is a first for us. It was a close call, both OD and EB got water in their wellies, and all of the eldest three got
splashed but no body actually fell in. Normally EB is the most likely candidate, and right at the end he made a move towards the river's edge, murmuring some thing about cleaning his shoes, but I managed to divert him away and the moment passed.
There was education too, quite interesting bits. This was added by some forward thinking of my part, as I downloaded and printed
this from the Nature Detectives website.
There was pond (or river) dipping where we found fresh water shrimp-like things:

There was the inspection of a world war two gun post, and a discussion of why it would be needed this far in-land (conclusion: Germans going up the river in flat bottomed barges. Quite possibly inaccurate, but it captured their imaginations.)

Then we went to a church, we love a good church. This one rates right up there with the best of them. Originating back to the Normans, it has lots of interesting and unusual bits, and you were allowed inside to look at and admire the marble engravings, the bell pulls and beautiful architecture:

And some really unique tombs:

And some famous inhabitants, well, OK,
one famous inhabitant - a Lord Mayor of London.
It was a great day, if we were ticking boxes, we could tick P.E - they walked about 5 miles in total, history - the church and gun post, geography - the water cycle, reading - tombstones, science - the biology of pond life, maths - working out the ages of the deceased from their tombstones and counting trees/ bugs/ people etc.
So, we covered the curriculum in a day, does this mean we get a week off now?
(In case you a wondering where we are, it's Buscot. )

or could the gun post be for anti aircraft fire?
Hello, thanks for your comment. I checked, and it was for the German barges - apparently there was concerns about the Axis conquering Britain by going up the Thames, so said the Lock Keeper when we went back the next day. Yes. We went back with my other parents the next day. Like we had two christmases as children, this year we had two Easters, in the same place. Very surreal.
that looks like a good day out. it has all the fine ingredients there!
